Travel Post: Do you Voodoo (Donuts)?

11:13 PM

Two of my friends traveled to Portland, Oregon recently (shoutout to Anna and Brian!) and they made the mandatory tourist pitstop to Voodoo Doughnut. For those of you who are unfamilar with Voodoo, it's a quirky doughnut place with unconventional menu items. For example, they have a"Cock-N-Balls" doughnut, and the "Maple Blazer Blunt" doughnut, which is shaped like a marijuana blunt. You can see all the doughnuts they have available on their menu.

My friends were sweet enough to bring me back some treats from Voodoo (see: at my incessant requests) to satiate my inner fat girl. I have to admit, I had an extremely long list of 11-12 different doughnuts to request at first before Anna gently reminded me that they were flying and had limited carry on space. It was difficult, but I narrowed down my requests to five doughnuts. (Can I say, first world problems?)

I would have taken pictures to post, but the doughnuts went through quite a stressful trip due to being in zip lock baggies and from the air pressure on the airplane. As a result, each of the doughnuts ended up looking like something one might see in the toilet. I suspect that would not entice my readers very much, so I've combed the web tediously (meaning, took some pictures off of Yelp and Google) to try and find some pictures for the doughnuts I was fortunate enough to try.

First up is the Mango Tango Doughnut. ("Raised yeast doughnut filled with mango jelly and topped with vanilla frosting and tang!") I have to say, the sound of a mango-filled doughnut greatly appealed to me. I don't normally like fruit/jelly filled doughnut, but I felt this warranted a taste. I have to say it wasn't as sweet as I anticipated this would be, so I was glad I tried it! I'm not sure I would get it again, but if you go ga ga for mangos, this might be the doughnut for you.

I also got the Portland Creme Doughnut. ("Raised yeast doughnut filled with Bavarian cream. Topped with chocolate and two eyeballs, representing the vision of our great city.") This was my favorite doughnut of the bunch! I don't like jelly-filled doughnut, but I do like custard-like flavors. This doughnut oozed of custard, and biting into it was like eating a dessert. I definitely would get this again.

Third on my list was the No Name Dougnut. ("Raised yeast doughnut with chocolate frosting, rice krispies and peanut butter!") This one tastes exactly as it sounds. It's a great combo! It tastes like homemade Rice Krispies on top of a doughnut.

Next, the Mexican Hot Chocolate Doughnut. ("Chocolate Cake doughnut dusted in cinnamon sugar and cayenne pepper!") This definitely sounds better than it tastes. Not that I have anything against chocolate, but…yea, it just tastes like a chocolate doughut I'm not a fan, but then again, I don't like rich chocolate flavors all too much.

Similar to the Mexican Hot Chocolate Doughnut was this Dirty Snowball Doughnut ("Chocolate cake doughnut with marshmallow topping, dipped in coconut and a dollop of peanut butter in the middle! Best Eaten in Pairs!").  Giggle giggle, it looks like a female body part! But unfortunately, it's not that great. I wouldn't get it again. It tastes like coconut shavings on top of a chocolate doughnut, and that's pretty much it.

The last one on my list was the Memphis Mafia Doughnut. ("Fried dough with banana chunks and cinnamon covered in a glaze with chocolate frosting, peanut butter, peanuts and chocolate chips on top!") This pastry was $5. FIVE DOLLARS. That's quite a lot for some fried dough and random toppings.

So, is it good? Actually, yes, it's pretty good. If you have an overactive sweet tooth, this certainly would alleviate your sugar cravings since it's pretty heavy with ample chocolate and nuts toppings. The only reason I would not get this again is because I feel the teeniest bit of guilt biting into it. I do think, that eaten in small increments, it may be worth the caloric splurge*. Because, c'mon, look at all the ingredients!

Overall, Voodoo Doughnut is a fun little place to try when you're in town, or if you have friends kind enough to bring some back for you. I would not necessarily go out of my way for the doughnuts since the dough itself tastes like…well, regular doughnuts. But with creative names and toppings. Maybe that's a game changer for you, but for me, I wouldn't wait 30+ minutes in line for them. I recommend trying this place out if you happen to be nearby and if there is no line though.

*Things worth the caloric splurge: cheesecake, macaroons, carrot cake, frozen yogurt, It-It's, french toast, waffles (NOT eggos), creme brulee, mexican food.
