Review: Trader Joe's Creme Brulee Dishes

8:06 PM

I absolutely adore creme brulee. I love the texture, the taste, everything about it - except for the hefty price tag. At $5-$10 dollars for a serving of creme brulee (at your average restaurant/bakery), it's certainly not a very cheap dessert! And creme served in your grocery's freezer aisle typically need a torch, not something everyone has handy in their kitchen. I certainly don't.

Enter, Trader Joe's and their creme brulee.

Trader Joe's creme brulee comes with 4 dishes of creme brulee in edible chocolate dishes for $4.99. On the box, it states that no carmelizing of the sugar is necessary.

Yep, just defrost at room temperature for an hour and enjoy!

Out of the box

I took this baby out and defrosted it at room temperature for an hour
The first thing I noticed that these creme brulee dishes did not have the hard, carmelized topping that is often the best part of the creme brulee. They didn't look like what was on the front of the box.

But once those facts are overlooked, the creme brulee itself is pretty delicious.

The texture is of a thicker consistency, almost pudding-thick, but still creamy. I was a fan of the taste of the creme brulee; it was very delicious and had strong hints of vanilla.

The creme brulee pairs perfectly with the chocolate shell.

While these creme brulee cups don't compare to a restaurant's creme brulee, they are a great substitution and only a fraction of the cost for $1.25 each dish. If you're fiending for creme brulee, but don't want to pay an arm and a leg for one, try Trader Joe's - you will be pleasantly surprised! Find them in the freezer aisle at your local Trader Joe's.

Let me know in the comments below if you've tried these before!
